Ork Ridge Cemetery was established by the Macon City Council in 1851 when a portion of Rose Hill Cemetery was set aside for the burials of enslaved people and free people of color. Record-keeping of those buried in Oak Ridge is spotty, and many buried here are in unmarked graves. In the 1870s, the city also began burying paupers in unmarked graves in Oak Ridge.
